The children and young people with special needs in the programmes run by Hope and Homes for Children, the General Directorate for Social Assistance and Child Protection (DGASPC), the ASSOC and Esperando Associations and the “Luchian” Day Center for Children and Young People With Special Needs in Baia Mare have been looking forward to taking part in this year’s edition of the Special Winter Games.

Over 120 children and young people took part in the competition’s disciplines and enjoyed the surprises prepared for them at the 19th edition of the Special Winter Games, which took place on the 1st of March on “Icoana” slope in Cavnic (Maramureș county). The objective of the event was to socially integrate these people through winter leisure and sports activities. The event is organised by Hope and Homes for Children with the support of Bridges for New Beginnings (USA).

The children and young people were grouped into 11 teams: The Bees, The Ladybugs, The Puppies, The Butterflies, The Snowdrops, The Hearts, The Tulips, The Daisies, The Snowmen, The Kitties and The Stars, each taking turn and participating into the 8 disciplines of the competition: footbal, hopscotch, parachute, tug of war, sledging, egg in spoon relay race and a challenge loved by all participants – dancing.

As is the case each year, the children and young people with special needs had been looking forward to the competition at Cavnic. This is an opportunity for them to compete against each other, to enjoy the snow and time spend outside and, finally, to be all pronounced winners. The event organised on the slope ended, as usual, with a festive moment, and all participants received diplomas, medals and T-shirts.

This year, volunteers from JYSK Romania and the YMCA Federation joined the participants in the competition’s challenges and cheered for them.

Hope and Homes for Children have been organising the Special Winter Games ever since 2000, with the declared objective of socially integrating children and young people with special needs, through winter leisure and sporting activities. The Special Winter Games are organised with the support of Bridges for New Beginnings (SUA).
