Over 130 special needs children and young people in the Maramureș county child protection services, from the ASSOC and Esperando Association 18th edition of the Special Winter Games, on the Cavnic Icoana slope. The sports event was organised by Hope and Homes for Children Romania and supported by Bridges for New Beginnings, USA.
The children and young people set up 10 teams (The Bees, The Ladybirds, The Puppies, The Butterflies, The Snow Drops, The Hearts, The Tulips, The Snowmen, The Cats and The Stars) and participated, in turns, in the 7 competition events. They played football, hopscotch on the snow, parachute, bowling, tug-of-war and the relay race with an egg on a spoon, they went sledging down the slope.
The fun on the slope ended with a small festivity, where the children received diplomas, medals and T-shirts. The children and the young people were thrilled to spend the day out on the slope, and they enjoyed the activities which provided a good opportunity for competition. For the special needs children and young people who participate, this competition is the year’s most anticipated event.
This year’s edition of the Special Winter Games involved volunteers from the Baia Mare YMCA youth organisation and volunteers from Hope and Homes for Children, who joined the participants throughout the event.
Hope and Homes for Children initiated the Special Winter Games in 2000, in order to socially integrate children and young people with special needs through winter leisure activities and sports competitions.
The Special Winter Games are organised with the help of Bridges for New Beginnings, USA.
